They’ve done it again. Weep. I am filled with joy, awe, longing and sadness as I see the sartorially super Sass & Bide Spring 2014 ‘Freetown’ collection make its way up the catwalk, down the catwalk and into the backstage area where it will delicately wrapped up, boxed up and shipped off. “Why does that make you sad, you irrational human bean?”, I hear you cry. Well, absolutely nowhere in that somewhat simplified description of the fashion week process do those garms adorn my body. My entire wardrobe should scream Sass & Bide! I should have beautifully embellished gold lame dresses coming out of my ears! Beaded necklines should be a permanent fixture upon all my tops and dresses! Leather peplums and dreamy dogtooth dresses with intricate cut-outs to the neck and a sprinkling of gold detailing should take pride of place pon my bod when I go out out! Sheer black and white polka dot layers should be forever draped over my mini skirts (in fairness, ‘mini’ is a bit generous when referring to the length of my skirts), making my leg nudity a bit more alluring and a bit less blatant. My hangers should be buckling and distorting under the weight of the white on white on white; they’re currently buckling under the weight of heavy embellishment, heavy leather and a heavenly/hellish array of prints (depending on your sensitivity to sass). LIFE IS SO UNF.

Sass & Bide is the definition of effortless, Aussie elegance mixed with complete cool and a certain degree of nonchalance: “Oh, you mean this long sleeve, silk, thigh-split dress which incorporates three different black and white prints with detailing on the drop waist? This old thing? With heels to match one of the prints? Yeah, I just threw it on”. It sure as hell doesn’t sound effortless but that’s the beauty of it!  I’m in love with Australian design because it is pure laid-back chic; it’s beautiful and strong and feminine but totally undemanding. You’re not dressed to the nines but you kind of are. You didn’t go out of your way to make a splash in that beautiful white silk jumpsuit but a splash you made! You weren’t planning on stealing the limelight but how could you not! You know? Am I understood? Talking gibberish? I’m sorry, I can’t help it. It’s the Sass & Bide effect.
